Success Tip # 3 (Moving is a Must!)

Moving is vital to your success. Exercise is so important. When I started at 350 lbs., I could hardly move. I was slow. I had a hard time breathing. I could not bend over because my stomach was huge. It literally cut my oxygen supply. I would try to pick something up off the floor and I would start gasping for air. I could walk for a few minutes, then I would have to stop to catch my breath. I was an Assistant Principal, in a building that had 5 floors. My Principal was constantly reminding me to check the stairs for students hanging out. Little did he know that that was almost impossible. I had to use the elevator. I would go in the elevator,floor to floor and check as best as I could.

During this time, my mom was dying. She had battled Breast Cancer, for 18 years. Her Oncologist, Dr. Rabinowe told us that she only had about 8-11 weeks of life left. At that moment, nothing was as important as giving my mom all the attention, all the love and above all keeping her comfortable. Three weeks before her death, she asked me to please lose weight and start taking care of myself. She was dying, but she still was worried about me. I promised her that I would.

I was dancing as best as I could with a dance troupe called Spectrum in Motion, in Hartford, Connecticut. Yes, can you imagine me at 350 lbs. dancing away. Miss Olivia was incredible. She was patient and so tolerant. She made us all feel like we were Ginger Rogers or Fred Astaire. We had 3 performances just before my mom died. She came to each and every one. She especially loved the closing dance that we did at the Bushnell Theater. She was telling all of her friends that I was going to be picked up and FLY! It was partly true, 2 very talented and STRONG dancers did do just that.

So, as you can see, moving is possible no matter your weight. Start slowly! Start at your ownl. My best suggestion is to do something that you enjoy. Walk, swim, bike, dance...there are endless possibilities. Start moving! Get healthy!
