Diet: Month # 1

The word DIET is a very well-known word in my English vocabulary.  Since I was a very young girl it has been a word associated with me.  I have been on just about every diet known to man.  I have been successful a few times, but usually I have had more disappointment than success!

My high school nurse, Mrs. Berian put me on my very first diet.  I was 14 years old.  I went from 174 pounds to 159 pounds.  My success did not last.  I tried Weight Watchers (numerous times), Jenni Craig, Nutri-System, Atkins, Slim Fast, Physician’s Weight Loss, South Beach Diet, Health Management Resources (HMR) and numerous self-made diet programs.

I have come to the conclusion that all diet programs work.  We can follow a program and be successful.  I feel that I am an emotional eater.  Being an emotional eater is real difficult, we eat when we are happy, sad, lonely, stressed, hurt, excited, nervous, angry and the list goes on and on.

I am a foodaholic!  I feel that we are like drug addicts or alcoholics.  The real problem exists that unlike the drug addict or alcoholic; we must have food.  Food is essential for healthy bodies.

Since at times, our emotions take charge, we lose control.  I have found that this is why we are so unsuccessful at losing and maintaining our weight loss.  Our minds sabotage our weight loss success.

I have found that this happens for a multitude of reasons.  We are unhappy in our careers.  We might not be in healthy, satisfying relationships.  Our childhood might have been dysfunctional.  We might feel insecure.  We might feel unworthy.  There are so many reasons why we have this problem, but in order to be well, happy and at a healthy weight; we must take this battle on.

We must choose to take care of ourselves.  We must demand respect. We have to love our bodies and our minds.  This is not an easy journey, but the positive outcome is well worth it.

Let’s start thinking about why we are overweight…what’s eating us?
